Our Founder – Dr. Floyd Cherry

CBIS had its beginnings in the early 1970’s when Dr. Floyd B Cherry became pastor of Daniel’s Chapel FWB Church in Wilson, NC. An adult bible school class was begun by Dr. Cherry. The church had never had this type of class before. As a result of the bible school class, Dr. Cherry was asked to start some night classes. Rev. Bowen asked Dr. Cherry to start a Bible Institute for the benefit of preachers in the area who needed somewhere to go and learn, but who had to work during the daytime. So, Dr. Cherry agreed, and the name of the Institute was Daniel’s Chapel Bible Institute. Dr. Cherry taught for two years and then left Daniel’s Chapel Church and brought the school with him to Pine Level, NC because the church did not want to keep it going. It was at this time that the school was given the name of Carolina Bible Institute. The name was chosen so that Dr. Cherry could keep the school if he moved again. The Institute was incorporated at this time. Classes were held at the Pine Level FWB Church for the first two years. Then the current property became available and was purchased. The white house that sits beside the current site was remodeled inside and classes were moved there. The classrooms were built first at the current site and the chapel was added later and, lastly, the administration building was built. The school started out with old school desks and later wooden desks were made by Dr. Cherry, Rev. Rudy Owens, and Rev. Ronnie Mohn and others. Some of the desks are still at the school today. About this time, Dr. Cedrick Pierce came to be a substitute teacher at the school and later became a member of the faculty. In 1987 a Seminary Department was added to the school. Also, in 1987, Dr. Floyd Cherry suffered a heart attack and Rev. Rudy Owens was asked to come to the school to help Dr. Cherry as business manager. In 1990, Dr. Cherry was made Chancellor of the school. He was not able to remain as active as before. Dr. Grady Tucker then took over at the school in Dr. Cherry’s stead for a short period of time. In 1990, Dr. Joe Ingram became President of the school. Rev. Rudy Owens came on board as a teacher in 1993 and in 1997 Rev. Owens became President of the school upon Dr. Ingram’s death. Drs. James Rogerson and Jerry Stephenson began teaching in the later 1990’s. The sacrifices of Dr. Floyd B. Cherry and others through the years are the reasons we have Carolina Bible Institute & Seminary today and it is now up to us, the current and future alumni, to make these sacrifices so the school can continue to go forward for the glory of our Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ!
